1. Powder Production:
The process begins with the production of stainless steel powders through atomization, which involves melting the stainless steel and rapidly cooling it to form fine metal particles. The resulting powder is then screened and classified to ensure consistent particle size distribution and quality.
2. Blending and Compaction:
Next, the stainless steel powder is blended with lubricants and other additives to improve flowability and facilitate compaction. The mixture is then loaded into a die and subjected to high pressure, typically using a mechanical or hydraulic press. This compaction step ensures the particles adhere to each other and form a solid green compact.
3. Sintering:
The green compact is then transferred to a sintering furnace, where it undergoes a carefully controlled heat treatment process. During sintering, the compact is heated to a temperature just below its melting point, causing the particles to bond and densify through diffusion. This results in a fully dense stainless steel structural part with improved mechanical properties.
4. Post-Sintering Operations:
Depending on the desired final properties and tolerances, post-sintering operations may be conducted. These operations can include secondary machining, heat treatment, surface finishing, and inspection to ensure dimensional accuracy and surface quality.
